One lucky Aiken HS German student will win a free trip to Germany
In June 2010, a group of twenty Aiken High School German students and their chaperons were sitting in the shadow of a castle in Nuremberg, Germany We were talking about how to improve our German program. We wanted to add something wonderful and cool for our students.
Someone mentioned a scholarship for graduating seniors. We all agreed it was a great idea. So…

The 2012 Aiken High School German Senior Scholarship will be awarded to a senior in German IV or German V at Aiken HS (Aiken, S.C.). This award will enable one student to spend ten to twelve days in Germany. It will pay for airfare to and from Germany. Personal expenses will not be covered.
Who?
The award will be given to a student in Aiken High School’s German program. The recipient must have at least a “C” average in German and not have been suspended from school at all this year (neither in-school nor out-of-school suspension). The recipient must have been in the program for at least two years.
Last year’s recipient was Bryson Wightman. Pictures here.
What?
The recipient will be the guest of a wonderful host family in Bayerisch Gmain.
When?
The recipient will depart for Germany on or around June 8th, 2012 and will return to the USA on or around June 19th, 2012.
Where?
Bayerisch Gmain is located not far from Salzburg, Austria, in Germany’s lovely Berchtesgadener Land.
Why?
In the Aiken High School German Program, we know two things with absolute certainty:
- Our students benefit greatly from international home-stay experiences.
- Our students are wonderful, impressive, terrific, young adults. It’s nice to do something nice for people like that.
If the statements above are true (and they are), a scholarship like this makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?
How?
Eligible students will fill out a simple application that will be distributed in class. The names of all eligible applicants will go into a hat and the name of one lucky student will be drawn from the hat at a ceremony in mid-January 2012. The student whose name is drawn will be the recipient. (Two additional names will be drawn as backups.)
