A FEW EXAMPLES

First, you will see a present tense sentence. Then you will see the same sentence in the past tense.

Explanation: To change the tense of the entire sentence, you simply change the tense of the modal verb.

Present: Ich kann nicht gehen. = I cannot go.

Past: Ich konnte nicht gehen. = I could not go.

Present: Wir müssen alles essen. = We have to eat everything.

Past: Wir mussten alles essen. = We had to eat everything.

Present: Ich mag kein Brot. = I do not like bread.

Past: Ich mochte kein Brot. = I did not like bread.

Present: Wir dürfen ins Kino gehen. = We are allowed to go to the movies.

Past: Wir durften ins Kino gehen. = We were allowed to go to the movies.

Present: Soll ich hier warten? = Am I supposed to wait here?

Past: Sollte ich hier warten? = Was I supposed to wait here?
